Purple Cloud
A play by Jessica Huang
Brought to life by the Stanford Asian American Theatre Project
(Spring 2017)

"When you’re hapa, you know deep down you’re greater than the sum of your many parts.
In Purple Cloud, three generations of Huangs deal with the many facets of their multiracial identities as – accompanied by four Jade Pieces– they embark on a mythical journey from China to America and back again. Through three intertwining stories, we see the Huang family through the messy and beautiful business of acculturation: Grandpa Lee immigrates from Shanghai to America during World War II; his son Orville deals with his confusion as a first generation Asian American, taught to pass as white and unsure of his own blood; and his granddaughter fights for her Chinese-ness through a tattoo of a deer and the search for her true name."

A Symbolic Play of Light and Shadow
"Dating back to a day thousands of years ago when four sons rode off under a purple sky, under a cloud so spectacular it marked this family forever. So that we – none of us – can ever be mistaken. We belong. We belong to each other."

Building the Cloud
I used wire mesh to create the structure of the purple cloud. The layers vary in density, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow.

The Kitchen Table
This piece serves multiple purposes. It provides storage space for props, and depending on the scene, gets used as a kitchen table or a cockpit base.

Cockpit Controls
Each panel was drawn on Adobe Illustrator and then laser cut. The panels were then painted and stapled together. There are two layers in total with vertical space in between. The laser cut holes are covered with butcher paper to diffuse the purple fairy lights installed to create an illusion of futuristic cockpit controls.

The Door
I designed this door with multiple uses in mind. The red side is used for moments in the play signifying the past, while the industrial side is a representation of the present. The colorful "ears" can be easily added or removed by the actors depending on the setting of the scene.

Shadow Play
The play is full of moments in the realm of the surreal. I decided to portray the otherworldly essence of those scenes in the form of a dramatic shadow play.
